Vapes are battery-powered smoking devices. They have a cartridge inside. This is filled with a liquid that’s heated into a vapor that you breathe in. The liquid is often made of toxic things. This means things like nicotine, chemicals, and flavoring.

Nicotine is the main ingredient in normal and e-cigarettes. Some types of vaping devices expose you to more nicotine than cigarettes do.

Nicotine is what makes tobacco addictive. It can cause you to crave smoking. If you ignore the craving, it can cause you to suffer from withdrawal symptoms.

Nicotine is not safe.

  • It raises your blood pressure. It also spikes your adrenaline. This makes your heart beat faster. It also raises your risk of having a heart attack.

  • It can harm the developing brains of children and teens.

  • It can also harm the developing brain of your baby if you smoke or vape while you’re pregnant.

The liquid in e-cigarettes can be dangerous. You could be poisoned from swallowing, breathing, or absorbing it through your skin or eyes. Exposure to secondhand vapor from e-cigarettes is also harmful to others around you.

Vaping is very addictive. If you’re a young person who vapes, this means you are more likely to start smoking than other young people who do not vape. Click here to learn more about vaping and how to talk to a young person about it.
